Combating Malnutrition

Maria is from Shewula, a remote and isolated mountainous area in the far eastern side of the Lubombo Region of Eswatini. Widowed, she is one of our CHIPS patients on treatment for a chronic condition. Kudvumisa Foundation staff visited her at her homestead and found her seated outside of her dilapidated stick and mud one room house. She shares this house with her 8 children and 6 grandchildren. In tears, she stares at her wilting maize cornfield. It has not rained for months; drought has already taken hold in this region. One wonders how she is going to be able to take her medications on an empty stomach or feed the rest of her family if the maize crops fail. Maria and her oldest daughter make a living by sewing grass mats. This is not near enough to feed the family.
Kudvumisa nurses found one of her 9 month old granddaughters grossly malnourished and failing to thrive. This twin baby is epileptic with repeating respiratory illnesses and has spent most days of her life in the hospital. Due to the mother’s health condition, the baby has to feed on formula milk. The mother struggles to buy the formula. Without urgent intervention, this baby’s health would continue to deteriorate.
Because of the generosity of donors, Kudvumisa Foundation is able to buy formula for the infant to boost her nutrition and see her flourish like other babies.

Real stories, real concerns that are lived out in many many different communities and families everyday. The medical outreach and economic development projects of Kudvumisa impact real people's lives in significant and meaningful ways.

About Kudvumisa Foundation
Kudvumisa began providing access to HIV related services in 2008 in an isolated, marginalized and impoverished area in eastern Swaziland. Swaziland still in 2017 holds the distinction of having the highest HIV prevalence rate in the world.
Kudvumisa has pioneered a community based health care model which has been very successful in bringing lifesaving HIV treatment to this population, which otherwise would have perished without the care.
Referrals for health services Kudvumisa could not provide were always referred to a government health facility 25 miles away. The new Kudvumisa Clinic will cater to providing these same “referral’ services even closer to the community, increasing access and decreasing costs. Providing compassionate and quality services as close to the people that need it most!

Kudvumisa Clinic

Kudvumisa Clinic
People are already lining up to access the newly completed main clinic. Word spreads quickly here in Maphiveni.

The equipment assessment by Project CURE is complete and we've received the shipping manifest.  The supplies will be coming out of their warehouse in Phoenix.  We are shy $3,018.31 to be able to ship the container at this point. If you are able to help with this, visit Project CURE's donor portal for this project. Project CURE is also a 501(c)3.

The success of our health outreach has always depended on finding and keeping both qualified and compassionate staff who epitomize what Kudvumisa stands for.  Once you find jewels, you want to keep them.  Providing competitive and even generous salaries is a key way of doing this.  We believe we've found jewels in our current nurses.  Joyleen, Tema and Nono are excellent nurses who have a heart for the people they serve.  With the clinic coming on line, we will have need of additional nursing staff.  Please consider adopting one or more of their salaries.  $1000 USD per month will fully cover one nurse's salary.

You can help play a part in this project:  please consider donating to Kudvumisa Foundation.  A US 501c3, your donations are tax deductible and stewarded with the greatest of care.

It can't be repeated too many times: "Thank You" from the thousands of people who will never be able to tell you themselves, how access to life saving health care has changed their lives! We and they, appreciate all your support and prayers.

Kudvumisa Clinic is compete!

Kudvumisa Clinic:  People are already lining up to access the newly completed main clinic. Word spreads quickly here in Maphiveni.
But we are not open yet!  We are waiting on the equipment, furnishings and supplies to make it functional.  Project CURE was on site this past weekend to do a facility assessment to see what supplies, furnishings and equipment they can supply. Looking forward, we included everything for the planned maternity ward and the dental clinic currently under construction.
We hope the main clinic can be be outfitted and operational before the end of the year.  A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped make all this possible: many many individuals, Rotary clubs and churches.  A special thank you to Cheri McDaniel, a very special lady from Baton Rouge whose tenacity and generosity went a long way in making all of this possible.

Kudvumisa Dental Clinic:
Construction continues on the dental clinic.  We are hoping this work will be completed by the end of the year.

CHIPS, the mobile Community Health Intervention Programme of Kudvumisa Foundation, has been able to help the most vulnerable in this isolated and marginalized area in eSwatini.  Your prayers and support make this possible. Partner with us to bring Life to eSwatini.

Sustainability of the mobile health outreach and the health clinic has always been our goal.
  • the Guest House will provide a place for visiting teams to stay and income to the health projects. We are working on pricing to complete.
  • we are still working on commercial development on the property, securing letters of intent from key leaseholders/anchor tenants as we work towards a business plan that is viable that can be be presented with the hope of securing financing for the project. The commercial development will provide local employment and a long term sustainable source of income to fund the clinic and mobile outreach.

August 2018 - Kudvumisa Foundation in eSwatini (Swaziland)

  • Papa was not able to walk after having a stroke that paralyzed half his body. He was not able to do anything on his own and his family was not able to get him to the hospital for proper care to make him strong again. With the help of Kudvumisa providing weekly transport to the hospital located an hour away he can now walk on his own.
  • Mdvuba is paralyzed. His relatives and neighbors struggle to care for his needs, and with no source of income he often can go days with little food. CHIPS provided him with 3 months of staple food so with the help of his neighbors helping him cook each day he now ends each day with a full stomach.
  • Sipho was poorly clothed, coughing for months, and was getting sicker by the week but had no money to go to the clinic. Not knowing what to do he stumbled upon the CHIPS clinic. The CHIPS team provided HIV testing; discovering he is HIV+. Concerned he had tuberculosis as well they provided transport to the nearest hospital with a fresh set of clothes for him to wear. Sipho was started on TB treatment at the hospital and soon will start treatment for HIV.
  • Mphuko was involved in an accident 2 years ago which left him completely immobile. He was seen every so often by a home-based care team to care for his bed sores and other wounds. He had no money or resources for gauze, gloves, hygiene products or medicine. CHIPS intervened and now provides wound supplies, transport to the hospital for his HIV medicine and hygiene supplies.
  • Joyce didn't know she was living with cancer until CHIPS held a cervical cancer screening campaign. CHIPS pays for lab processing, provides transport to different clinics and hospitals for surgery and chemo therapy, and helped with registration into the government system so she can access the limited medical care available here.

CHIPS, the Community Health Intervention Programme of Kudvumisa Foundation, has been able to help the most vulnerable in this isolated and marginalized area in eSwatini (Swaziland is now eSwatini!).  Your prayers and support make this possible. Partner with us to bring Life to eSwatini.

Good News:
  • We reached our goal for the dental matching grant!  But there are still shortfalls for equipment (compressor & sterilizer) and finishings  Please help us fill the gaps! Work has already begun!
  • the main clinic renovation under the Rotary grant is winding down. Finishing touches are being done now!
  • Project CURE will be onsite in September to begin the process of developing a facility equipment list: then filling a shipping container to send over.
Sustainability of the mobile health outreach and the health clinic has always been our goal.
  • the renovation of the Guest House has slowed as we raise funds to complete the construction. The Guest House will provide a place for visiting teams to stay and income to the health projects.
  • we are working on the commercial development on the property, securing letters of intent from key leaseholders/anchor tenants as we work towards a business plan that is viable that can be be presented with the hope of securing financing for the project. Good News and News to Ponder!

Good News:
  • we are 75% towards the total amount of $15000 in matching funds toward Kudvumisa's dental clinic! Please help us meet the final goal!
  • the main clinic renovation under the Rotary grant is winding down. We estimate substantial completion in a month!
  • projected full funding for equipping the clinic through Project CURE was reached and we are hoping to begin working with Project CURE staff to facilitate a site visit and the process of developing an equipment list: then filling a shipping container to send over.
News to Ponder:
  • US government funding has basically come to an end for the mobile outreach, while dwindling year to year, this year saw the most drastic cuts with tremendous increases in targets.  We saw these targets as unreachable. We have negotiated reduced targets with the greatly reduced funding.
  • While Kudvumisa has subsidized salaries (through generous donations by our friends like you) over the years of the grants, the dwindling grants made this more and more impractical.  With great sadness we did not renew any contracts for the project staff. We will re-look at reduced staffing and reduced salaries in the coming months for the mobile outreach.
  • Our nurses will be kept on staff to continue to provide access to HIV care for the population that has come to rely on Kudvumisa's CHIPS program over the years.
Sustainability:
  • sustainability of the mobile health outreach and the health clinic have always been our goal, but with the removal of grant support this becomes even more critical now.
  • the renovation of the Guest House has slowed as we await more funds to complete the construction. The Guest House would provide a place for visiting teams to stay while providing income to the health projects.
  • we are working on the commercial development on the property, securing letters of intent from key leaseholders/anchor tenants as we work towards a business plan that is viable that can be be presented with the hope of securing financing for the project. The commercial development would provide both local employment and also a long term sustainable source of income to fund the clinic and mobile outreach.
